This program will focus on the relationship between developmental themes and their ramifications for psychoanalytic technique in psychotherapy with gay men. The development of a sense of self in the context of sexual orientation and sexual identity will stand in the foreground of this program’s reflections and discussions. The reformulation of oedipal dynamics, the impact of shame, and the tension between interpersonal and object-relationship dimensions will be discussed in the context of transference-countertransference dynamics as well as needs for the therapeutic holding environment. The reviewed concepts and ideas will be illustrated with case material.
