Dr. Jonathan Sklar is a noted Ferenczian scholar and author of  the book, Landscapes of the Dark. In Landscapes, he outlines how Sandor Ferenczi’s ideas, about psychoanalytic theory and technique, can be applied to the treatment of more regressed patients who are usually not accessible by standard classical technique. Ferenczi’s ideas were 50 years ahead of their time. He may be considered the first contemporary psychoanalyst, since many of his technical ideas which were considered radical in the 1920’s, are common practice among psychoanalysts who consider the transference-countertransference dynamics and experience as the central focus of psychoanalytic work. Ferenczi restored environmental trauma as central in the development of the self, and psychopathology when adverse conditions present to the fragile developing ego and self. In this he opposed Freud’s view of Psychic Determinism as central to development of the structure of the mind: the ego, id, and superego. Ferenczi’s ideas were suppressed by Freud’s followers but, like all theories and technique that have validity and reliability, have been re-discovered by a new generation of analysts that have found them useful in their practice especially with more regressed patients.

Venue: Vancouver General Hospital
899 West 12th Avenue, Paetzold Auditorium, Pattison Pavilion, Vancouver, B.C. V5Z 1M9.

Dr. Sklar has been a consulting psychoanalyst to the NHS, for over 20 years. In this capacity, he has worked analytically with regressed patients and in groups with clinicians treating regressed patients. Having worked with Enid Balint, he used Michael Balint’s approach called Balint Groups in helping sensitize clinicians to underlying dynamics when working with patients. Sklar will be presenting his work in the hospital milieu over his long career working in the NHS. His insights will be of interest to all who work with more regressed or so-called difficult-to-treat patients.

Other participants in the program will be David Heilbrunn, Endre Koritar, James Fabian, and David Kealy.
