The Dr. Elmor Smit Memorial Lecture
Nancy Goodman, Ph.D., FIPA

Close attention to the transference and countertransference experience is brought to a case of sadomasochism in order to show how destructive aggression leading to negative therapeutic outcome can be avoided. I, the analyst, had to experience deep resonances of sadism and masochism in order to begin a symbolizing process, both for myself and for the patient. When unrecognized, repetitive sadomasochism can lead to a deadening of the mind and merger. Enlivenment comes about as symbolization takes place. An introduction to the clinical
portion highlights the developmental factors that often coalesce around sadomasochistic compromises. Commentaries about the case that appear in the book: Battling the Life and Death Forces of Sadomasochism: A Clinical Book (Karnac, 2013), co-editor/writers H. Basseches,
P. Ellman, & N Goodman will accompany the case discussion. Jim Grotstein’s ideas of a “psychoanalytic love affair” that is presented in the case captures well the deep involvement of analyst and analysand around sadomasochistic love and hate dynamics.
