We are pleased to announce that the WBCPS (Western Branch of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society) and WPSI (Western Psychoanalytic Society Institute) have recently amalgamated and will now be known by our new joint name: WCPSI | Western Canada Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.

The Western Canada Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (WCPSI) is an association of psychoanalysts engaged in the development and advancement of clinical psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic thought in the Western Provinces of Canada.

The WCPSI is a branch of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society, a component society of The International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA), the world’s leading association of professional psychoanalysts. Founded in Edmonton in 1978, the branch moved to Vancouver in 1995, where the majority of the members reside.

The Vancouver Institute of Psychoanalysis was established in 2003 as a branch of the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis and is now known as the Western Canada Psychoanalytic Institute (WCPI). The WCPI remains based in Vancouver and provides training in clinical psychoanalysis in Vancouver and is the only certified training program in psychoanalysis in Western Canada.

The WCPSI presents many educational programs throughout the academic year that are open to the mental health community. It holds an Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) most years, a day of presentations and workshops that cover a wide range of clinical and theoretical topics. The ASM is well attended by mental health professionals from the greater Vancouver area, the Western Provinces of Canada, and neighbouring cities in the USA. The Continuing Education Program is another major undertaking of the WCPSI and offers courses in the theory and practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and its applications to the community at large. In addition to these major academic activities, the WCPSI sponsors a third important educational and clinical component, its Scientific Program which consists of four annual scientific meetings that focus on clinical and theoretical issues that arise in the clinical practices of members, candidates, or guests of the WCPSI.

Membership in the WCPSI is limited to individuals who have completed psychoanalytic training at a branch of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society, including the Western Canada Psychoanalytic Institute, or by application from another psychoanalytic society sanctioned by the IPA. The members meet four times a year to carry out the business of the society.
