MINDING THE BODY: THE BODY IN PSYCHOANALYSIS AND BEYOND

WBCPS ANNUAL CONFERENCE | Saturday, April 9, 2016
Venue: Arbutus Club 2001 Nanton Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. V6J 4A1

There is a trend, in today’s world, toward using the skin and the body as the site for the expression of internal struggles. British psychoanalyst Alessandra Lemma invites us to think about what psychological functions are accomplished by modifications to the skin. In the keynote address Professor Alessandra Lemma will highlight the magnitude of Freud’s original insights about the body ego for understanding the development of the mind and challenges posed by our embodied nature. Drawing on her clinical experience with individuals who extensively modify their bodies through cosmetic surgery, tattooing, piercing and sex reassignment surgery, she will illustrate the importance of understanding the body and its vicissitudes in the analytic consulting room and in everyday life.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES | After attending this presentation and the clinical seminar, the conference participants will:

1. Review key psychoanalytic ideas regarding the body and its impact on the mind from Freud onwards
2. Apply these ideas to the field of body modification practices.
3. Develop some understanding of how  the body may be used to manage psychic pain.
