In preparation for the Scientific Meeting with Judy Eekhoff on September 28, 2024, the WCPSI is pleased to offer a 4 part study group in which to review several of Dr. Eekhoff’s papers on the theme of working with patients who have experienced severe disorganization in their early relationships. Eekhoff notes that in such situations there can be a disruption of normal projective identifications which may lead the individual to psychically ‘merge’ with their primary carers creating unconscious fusion primitive organization development. When this fusion is disrupted through the presence of another mind, a state of ‘confusion’ emerges. Many such patients may be successful professionally but fail in personal relationships. They seem unable to access the linking emotions of love, hate and curiosity. Instead, they often mimic relationship and use words about words instead of words expressing emotion. Without access to their emotional lives, their ability to think and to dream is also compromised. This study group will address issues such as the black hole, the somatic, psychic equivalency, hope and dread in the therapeutic hour.

Facilitators: Endre Koritar, MD., FRCPC(C) Judith Setton-Markus M.Ed. R.Psych., John Tavares, MD, FRCPC(C) Darren Thompson, MD., FRCPC (C). All are full members of the WCPSI.

Learning Objectives:
In this course, participants will:

  1. Explore the Black Hole as a primitive psychosomatic representation of undifferentiation and traumatic loss or absence of a mothering object, experienced later in life as meaninglessness, nothingness and hopelessness.
  2. Explore Bleger’s ideas about early psychic differentiation, psychic equivalency, undifferentiation, and Magma.
  3. Discuss the early infantile experience from different conceptual vertices.
