The Clinical Consultation Group is a seminar series for clinicians interested in deepening their practice through a live, experiential exploration of their current clinical work from a psychoanalytic perspective. The functional use of fundamental analytic concepts such as free association, unconscious communication, transference-countertransference, and analytic process will be demonstrated through the free associational process of the group as it explores clinical material together.
Each seminar, a participant reads an anonymized transcript of a recent session. Members of the group associate to the material and share related experiences that come to mind. The group’s free thoughts form the basis for developing a deeper sense and wider view of the expression of unconscious content in the transference-countertransference.
The exploration of our individual metapsychologies (conscious and unconscious) and of the unique ways in which each clinician works technically with psychic material and with analytic process are related topics central to this course.
Course Information
- Each participant will present one transcript of a recent session either with a new client, from a brief therapy or from a long-term psychotherapy case. A sign-up sheet and brief instructions will be circulated before the seminar begins.
- Transcripts as well as vignettes or other clinical material shared by members will be presented anonymously to preserve confidentiality. Identifying material will be omitted or fully disguised in transcripts and discussion.
- To further protect confidentiality, participants agree to refrain from discussing case material and members’ comments outside of the group.
- Participants will inform the group leader of any absences.
- Seminars will include discussion of analytic concepts such as free association, unconscious communication, transference-countertransference, and analytic process as they emerge.
- Practical topics such as beginning treatment, first contact, the frame, first sessions, termination, and other considerations of technique will be discussed as relevant to the clinical material.
- The last seminar will include a discussion of the individual metapsychologies and clinical approaches expressed by group members throughout the seminar.
- This seminar is currently offered online but may also be offered in person in the future.
- This course is open to all clinicians interested in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and is especially relevant for anyone considering future analytic training (WCPSI, September 2028).
Coleen Gold, MA, BC-ATR, FIPA, is a Training and Supervising Analyst in private practice in Vancouver with a special interest in psychoanalytic aesthetic theory.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will deepen their understanding of the practical applicability of fundamental analytic concepts such as free association, unconscious communication, transference-countertransference and analytic process.
- Participants will learn more about their own and other clinicians’ internal metapsychology and its concomitant resulting clinical technique; that is, how unconscious theory and practice creates unique relational therapeutic action.
- Participants will expand their understanding of psychoanalytic work experientially, through the sharing of current clinical session transcripts and the group’s free associations to them.
Registration closes April 5th @ 5pm PST
